Often called "The Island of the Smiles" which refers not so much to the friendliness of the people but to the eternal sun smiling on her endless beaches. Some call her "The Island of Marvels", for the immense richness of her beauty.

The island of Madagascar (1.580 km of north to the south and 580 km east to west), is a kaleidoscope of 14 million residents of African, Arabian and Eastern blood, Madagascar is the world's fourth largest island.

LemursThis southern African country is a unique meeting place for nature-lovers from all over the world. Today, the island sees tourists of many nationalities; some have come to do a classic north-south tour, others to make an adventurous trekking in a remote area of the island. Still more come to soak up the sun on unspoiled beaches and to dive the coral reefs.

Madagascar has two seasons: a hot, rainy season from November to April; and a cooler,
dry season from May to October. The best season for travelling is in general April to September. From mid-September through October, the jacaranda trees are in bloom, baby lemurs are being born.


Sainte Marie, (Nosy Boraha), a 57 km-long island (see map) off Madagascar's east coast, has become the premier Malagasy holiday venue. Visitors will soon understand why : This island is beautiful, offering the ultimate escape from civilisation. The hotels along its coast range from basic (perfect for students & budget travellers) to classy, upmarket establishments with all necessary modern facilities.

Sainte MarieThe lush tropical images of an enormous tropical garden. The Island is honeymoon couples. Sainte Marie boastsnumerous stunningly beautiful beaches and secluded coves, fringed coral reefs offshore offer excellent snorkelling and scuba diving amongst the many coral reefs. In August and September, hump-backed whales migrate here and are a great attraction.

Ile Aux Nattes (Nosy Nato) is a small island south of Sainte Marie. Off its idyllic beaches are some of the best reefs in the Malagasy region and well worth a visit.
